Regency Personalities Series
In my attempts to provide us with the details of the Regency, today I continue with one of the many period notables.
William Mason
February 12 1724-April 7 1797
Mason was a poet and gardener. Born in Hull and then educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge, he was ordained in 1754 and held a number of posts in the church. In 1747 his poem ”Musaeus, a Monody on the Death of Mr. Pope” was published to acclaim and went through several printings. He had several other works including a long poem to gardening. The English Garden in three volumes over 1772-1782. His garden designs included one or the 2nd Earl of Harcourt. In 1785, William Pitt the Younger chose him to succeed William Whitehead as Poet Laureate but Mason refused the honor.
