It has been just a few days but I am writing quickly these days. Cramming a lot out. Though I have slowed down this week over the last three. For three weeks I wrote at the pace of 50,000 words each week. Now I am slowing down to 40,000 words so I do more with my day then just write.

This is a graph of my writing for the weeks of 2011. The amount shown for Week 6 is on Wednesday, the middle of the day with four more days to write.

My February 2011 Writing log started on Monday so at the moment I am just that 15K words into the month.

My exploration into a Ruritanian Romance is now 60,000 and a little less than half way. The Prize is not as Great as You Think combines those elements along with part of a plot line I had thought about a few years ago and jotted down. My notes of story ideas and plots go back for years. At one time I would wake from a dream and jot down the idea. Last night I had a dream I thought was going somewhere as well and the watching Lights Out today I saw that some of my dream stems from that as well as the George Clooney picture from last year, Up in the Air. The premise of my dream was that there was a deal, a business deal and the hero, me of course, was the smart guy, while the other side of the deal was clearly the costar of Up in the Air, Vera Farmiga.

She was the hot number in the plot that was a great Wall Streeter with access to a lot of venture capital. I was in the position with Raymond Enkeboll Designs that I used to hold and advising how to do a deal. Something happened that caused the hot number to scrag the deal which was fine with our hero for he had booked an adjoining room to the hottie and they they took forward a similar deal together making more than either would working for the man.

Who knows, one day I may add to the idea and make a story from it.

In the meantime we are at 218K words for the year and this is the beginning of the 2nd chapter from The Prize is not as Great as You Think:

2) All The Little Pieces

The manor house, near the outskirts of the city was very fashionable. Reginald had seen it before more than once, though he had avoided the inside. He smiled to himself for the expression like the plaque came to mind. Not that Princess Margaritte, was anything at all like that. Just that an alliance, a marriage would signify the end of his life of freedom. That he would have to start serious work here in the principality. Work that his father was more than qualified for and willing to do.

With that understood, why then should he worry about taxes, and bread, Germans and railways? Father actually wanted to make all those decisions. He complained all the time that it was too much and he needed help, but Reginald had learned early on that was not the case. That when he had offered to help when he was younger, the Grand Prince would smile and then thank him. Father would say it was noble of him to offer but that Reginald should enjoy his life before he was forced to wear the crown and make such decisions.

After offering a half a dozen times, perhaps more over the years to really work on serious matters, and always being refused, Reginald took to heart that he should indulge himself. Perhaps he had overdone it. Certainly the press loved him for overindulgence. He was advised by the owners of not only the papers from Steilenberg, but those in the provinces, that he contributed greatly to their profits. Everyone wanted to read about what he was doing, or planning to do. They liked pictures of the beautiful women he dated, and fortunately they papers only called it dating. Should they report on how many women he slept with, and sometimes more than one, his reputation might not have been so great amongst the people.

He had one affair that had been placed in the papers so long ago now that no one remembered. It had caused him grief and he had come to an understanding then with the papers. They could report on all sorts of things that he did, but what happened in his bed, and who with, were never to be reported.

“Highness,” he saluted by sharply bringing his heels together. Then he leaned over and kissed the proffered hand. Margaritte didn’t rise when he entered, for she too was a princess of the Fitzroy Perry blood. Though he did outrank her, she was establishing her rights. He had encountered such women before. And of course he had met Margaritte many times. She was one of the most beautiful ladies in Steilenberg. He agreed with his father about that. Was she the woman he would marry, that still was to be determined.

“You do me great honor by visiting and so early in the day? Why I think the sun has only been up a few short hours.”

“Yes, I saw it rise for I have not been to sleep yet. Too much to do and so I must burn that candle at both ends.”

She trilled, for that was what her laugh was. Like a little precious bird. Blond hair, a descendent of one of the infusions from the north. She was one of the many cousins, and anyone who had the least amount of Fitzroy Perry blood seemed to want to proclaim that they were a cousin. Not that his cousin Gerald did, fool. He would have to tell him that the next time he came to town he need use some scent or other to hide the smell of his cows.

Perhaps that would be a good reason to marry, then he would place children between the man and the throne. Every son would cause the need for his cousin Gerald to come to the capital less frequently. “What would you say to eight sons?” He asked Margaritte. Not only because the thought occurred to him just then, but also eight would be needed to bear the damn platform with St. Michael atop it. He was still sore from that. Sure that he had torn a muscle in his shoulder.

“Eight, I think you need to first marry, and then we shall discuss it.” She smiled but he saw that it did not reach her eyes. She was calculating what that question had meant.

“You must meet my cousin Gerald. You know he is next in line to the throne after me? It so irks Athalan. My brother has never accepted that he is not in the line of succession.”

“I do not think of Athalan much,” Margaritte said.

Reginald nodded, “You know most women are like that, but I think that is a mistake. Not that women should like him for his charms or his looks, though you would think with his parents he would look better. No, I think women should like Athalan for his ambition. And what he will do with that ambition should he find he is disliked.”

She laughed again but not the trill she had before. This was forced. “You make him sound dangerous.”

Reginald nodded, “He is probably the most dangerous man I know. I fear that in the years to come we may find out just how dangerous he is. Father refuses to see it. You should know this also should I court you to be my bride and then the Grand Princess. If we were to have any sons, Athalan would not necessarily be there friend.”

She did not laugh, “If you feel this way, then why not exile him? Surely you could arrange that.”

“He is the son of my father, and he is my brother. I know his ambitions seethes inside of him but until he acts upon it, I will do nothing. It is an unspoken truce between us. He wants recognition for all his efforts for a country he will never lead. I pretend that when I am Grand Prince I will do something to aid in his desires.”

She shook her pretty blonde head. She was twenty three he had been told and overripe for marriage. But she was holding herself out for the biggest fish that she could find, and that was him. Did that make cousin Gerald the second biggest fish? Smelling of fish and cow, the man was intolerable.

Well once Reginald was wed and producing some boys, then it would not matter. Cousin Gerald could stay in the country forever. There were other younger cousins who could carry the damn platform during the pageant. And if he had hurt his shoulder, then Reginald would force his father to take a flux and stay in bed next pageant. That was a way to get out of carrying the dame platform. If he had to act as regent for his father for even an hour, it would supersede all other duties and requirements. Athalan had told him that, but only after they got to the damn top of the hill and the Palace gates this year.

Two weeks into the year, I had a heart attack. it is hard to remember what my goal for the year was then, but I think perhaps it was to write 1,000,000 words for the year. At the end of the first two weeks though, i was on target for 1.5 having written 30K each week.

The heart attack changed that, as too did other events of the year. Bankruptcy, losing our house, trying to find a new house. These all took away from the task and pleasure of writing. The year ended though with having written 1,306,711 words. Over 25,000 words each week, and 108,000 words each month. I make no predictions about the next year. I need to pursue a day job as soon as we move and find a place to live.

My writing will be cut I am sure then.

I edited also this year, readying books. The Shattered Mirror is done and just awaiting a final copy edit from my friend Melinda before it goes to publication.

Synopsis of the Books Written

Born to Grace 2 The Turmoil

This is part of a trilogy, the Born to Grace series. Here Caradoc the son of a duke, third in line to his father’s title starts the series as a squire to a prince of his realm. Now, after adventures in the first book, he is becoming a battle general. A very good one. Also a very good fighter. At his side an effective magus and they help defend their realm which at the start of the book is doing it’s best to help it’s neighbor settle a civil war.

By the end of the book they will be involved in their own civil war as relations of the king try to take power.

The Shattered Mirror (A Regency Romance)

Our hero is a retired sea-captain, wounded in the Napoleonic conflict and our heroine is having her first London season. The war is over and our heroine looks forward to meeting all sorts of eligible men who have been away fighting the war. Little does she realize that the best man she meets is the broken sea-captain that she had grown up near.

Beggars Can’t Be Choosier (A Regency Romance)

Our hero is a near penniless as a lord can be. Wishing to make a name for himself in politics, but not able to find 100 pounds a year to live on with estates rented to pay off debts that his family has incurred. Into his life comes a very rich heiress who has no status, but tremendous wealth. They strike a deal to join together and each shall realize their dreams of status and a political life before they shall part.

Two Peas in a Pod (A Regency Romance)

Two identical brothers return to London society from Waterloo not wishing to do more then rest from years of war. Little do they realize that their lives shall be turned upside down by a pretty smile. Except the one they wish to see they fear is meant for the other and as they switch places with each other, confusion ensues.

Terra’s Birthright

Expanding to the stars, mankind is controlled by the richest planets. This is fine until the colonies begin to think they should have a say also. Someone, on some planet, will be the vote that starts and avalanche of changing how mankind governs itself, or how it will still be governed. Dealing with those concepts in the future as we have dealt with them in the past, is what is explored here.

Steam and Thunder

The first of a duology, what happens if the steam engine was invented in a time period similar to Henry the II? Will the neighboring countries sit still for such technological advances? Will the nobility be quiet as their lands are denuded of men seeking a better life and working in the factories where this new tech is used?

Tempest and Sword

The second book of the duology, we see how those citizens now think they should have some say in their lives. How still the neighbors have issue with one country possessing the technology that advances them further than anyone else.

Succession Crisis

In a world where we see the crisis like Henry VIII to Edward VI. Here though the regents will be out to carve up the kingdom and even have a hand in the kings death, as we see the world through the heir’s eyes and worry that his head won’t be long on his shoulders should the regents have their way. The neighboring countries also want to ensure that the country our hero will rule does not grow powerful and divided regents or a young king is an opportunity to break the kingdom.

The Three Lastoleers (Star Musketeers)

What if the universe, several millenia from now adopts the very essence of Dumas’ France of the 3 Musketeers? What if we see our favorite characters in space?

You Ought to Trust Your Mother (A Regency Romance)

For NaNoWriMo 2010, a regency focusing on a young girl of great beauty realizing that man do not see her other qualities until she meets a lord who she really thinks misses her essence. The truth is he sees her better than any other and our heroine’s mother believes him to be an excellent match. What young girl wants to trust her mother in such things.

By The Book

Not wanting to be a warrior, and not wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, our hero is stuck, for he is good at being a warrior. He knows though he could be better and reads about it. He reads ancient tomes and adapts those thoughts to his own situations. He writes these down to help train his friends to be better at warfare and they are. Good enough that the local lords see it and through all their success, our hero advances to lead the armies, though his hatred of war is ever growing.

KoTohLan II-Hoveria

This is part of a seven book series. The first was written in 2009. Here the idea is that the gods saw many years before our current events that the ruling dynasty they favored had those who would destroy it from within as well as without. They hid our hero with the aid of some influential people from those who took over. Now the hero is grown and finds he is the heir of the old dynasty. The empire of 7 kingdoms also has been crumbling. He is to visit each kingdom, one per book, and do heroic actions that bring the people behind him to reunite the broken empire. This book sees him forming an army in the southern most kingdom. It teaches him to be a general. A skill he will need to build and also gain the loyalty of men for the threats should only continue to grow in the following books.

Just before the year end numbers, KoTohLan II-The Hoveria (2nd of the seven kingdoms of the former Karnexian empire Karn, Hoveria, Haltoria, Jorland, Camoria, Ottoria and Fellane) book has reached 300 pages.

Currently 90,036 words long. A quick break to shout out and then back to it. We are closing in, about 11 pages, from a 1.3 million word year.

Also this last week read another Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings, PastedGraphic.WoRJOOqYeYok.jpg and reviewed at my book review page and other places.

The novel has reached the first major action point and that is spanning a few chapters. As before with such action scenes my initial plot outline seems to make this area grow. One chapter is never enough to develop battles. It always seems to take more. Further in hindsight in this tale, I do not know if I flesh in the growth of our characters enough leading up to the chapter I am at. In editing I might have to add a flashback, a scene, or certainly one or two lines here and there that suggest other events happened that got our heroes to where they are.

Otherwise the tale has come along well.

From Chapter 3

The Shrinking Border of the Empire

“Jack, this is by rights your home. Any ideas?” Magnus sat next to him as they came up to the town of Lemore. It was the last town of Karnexia before they crossed into Hoveria.

“I have been waiting for you to ask. Here I am Hoverian, Master Farthing is from Fellane, John is from Jorland, and Mischa from Karn, you, well by rights you were born here also landsman, eh?”

They had all accepted the tale of his birth, being the son of Willfred Larstier and that a group of people were hiding the secret. “Yes but I left here a short month or so after my birth. Taken to Haltoria where my childhood memories are.”

“It does seem that our little group has some tie to nearly all the kingdoms. We do not have anyone from Ottoria or Camoria. Would have liked that man Bix with us. Older than spit, but I think he can pull a sword near as fast as Farthing.”

The Ko Master had been showing them what he could do with his short blade. He said that no Lord of Fellane was truly complete unless they had both the long and short blades to show rank. He had given his long blade to his second son, for the oldest did not want to lead his clan when Farthing decided to retire. His son would have to give him back a long blade so that he could now continue his work. In the meantime he was showing the men he travelled with how to better use their swords. He had techniques, even tricks, that more than twelve years of blade work had not taught Magnus, and he had spent time with masters of the blade from Fellane before.

“I expect you may be right about Bix, but he guards the Duchess and she, I believe went to Camoria to visit her father. Now however, we are on the border of your old homelands and I must, or we must make some decisions.”

“You must, Carl. We follow you. It seems I have followed your lead from the moment I met you and I had over two hundred men in my company. No, once you came to our aid at the Blue Boar, it was foreordained that I was your man. I had placed aside certain parts of the code of honor when I became an Imperial Officer, but that was part of the oath. The Imperials are smart enough to have we of Hoveria and those of Fellane do so. Else we might not only be tied up in our own rules, but end up sparring with our brother officers and soldiers. Sparring you know that could turn deadly.” Jack said.

“Yes, I have made a study of Hoveria as the years have gone by. I come here because I want to see if those who were witness to my birth still live, or spread this story. It will not take the emperor so long to remember that if Willfred did have a child, it would have been with Ballene, his lover and that they both were here throughout Hans’ reign as well as his coup. That Joss sent Duke Mikal here to kill them and he said he had done so. Never reporting that there was a child.”

“But Mag… Carl, I mean. It still is hard to remember to call you that. You said yourself that Trader Cortier whisked you away weeks before Mikal reached your parents. That you were safe on your way to Haltoria and all who knew of your birth were sworn to secrecy, first because they did not want Hans to know of it.”

He nodded. He also agreed it was a struggle to call him Carl, but he had to be known by another name else things could indeed be difficult. Soon enough, unless Joss was totally stupid as well as vindictive, the man would send agents to investigate the source of the rumors. If they had said that the Larstier heir existed, then Carles might have been the father of such, or Saul. Saul could have fathered a child before he became a priest. Certainly before he castrated himself.

Crossed another milestone in the year end milestones. The 4000 pages record has now been bumped out to over 4200 pages. With probably another 5 pages to go today finished up 1,260,809 words. What will be the next milestone before the end of the year?

As I achieved this victory, I was looking at Apple’s iBookstore and found a wealth of books that Project Gutenberg ProjectGutenberg-freeebooksonlinedownloadforiPad%2CKindle%2CNook%2CAndroid%2CiPhone%2CiPodTouch%2CSonyReader.agh4YJXRHTgx.jpg had transcribed. Little did I think I would find one of my favorites there, and one that I had been thinking of rereading. Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper which should still be under copyright. It is not 75 years since publication, though Piper did kill himself in the sixties.

I wrote a review for it at LibraryThing in my copy of the Fuzzy Papers

http://www.librarything.com/work/178808/book/37839520

This is a dual book combining Little Fuzzy and Fuzzy Sapiens, and though I have read it several times, my memory, specifically is a little fuzzy. Charming, heart-warming are keywords that I can attribute to these tales. It deals with our human expansion to the stars and our encountering those little green martians we have always expected. Accept they are not what we have thought.

That have not always been there in their UFO’s spying on us, or are part of a xenocidal race that wants our extinction. If anything man wants to see the end of the alien. Perhaps bleeding heart liberals would be the thought of the defender of the Fuzzy, but Piper writes of Fuzzy in such a way as to make then an endearing race. Part little child, part puppy dog, if my memory is correct.

The conflict is that if there are alien intelligences out there, who owns that world. We have seen Cherryh look at this from a distance in Downbelow Station, and the same with Weber in On Basilisk Station, but those books were not focused on the thought of someone speaking up for that Alien’s rights and ensuring that they are protected. That is the plot line here. We have a company world that wants to exploit the world, we have a native intelligence that needs to be defended working within the system, but unable to articulate for themselves their defense. Hence a really great set of books that led to two additional authors writing books about them, and then years after Piper’s death, a third tome being unearthed and published.

Here are 4 pictures of this work from the Internet

Downloading the manuscript onto my iPhone, I was thus able reread this work that has stuck with me for more than 30 years once more, my copies of the books in the series are in storage. It took an hour here, and another there and went pretty quickly. The screen size of the iPhone only allowing 3 or 4 sentences per page.

In comparing my review to the reread the book is dated and the editing, while the subject matter does reflect science fiction of he sixties, a great deal of time is spent on the subject of sapience in the creatures, who are more cat like then puppy-dog like. Perhaps Piper had a kitten at the time he wrote the book. The conflict is there, and there are heartwarming scenes. Point of view changes too drastically sometimes. And some character could be better fleshed out. Once the action shifts to the courtroom and the scientists, we become victims of the sixties and their exploration of things that had not been worked on before.

A great deal of the court room drama is over the scientists definition of sapience, which had been discussed when our lovable aliens had first been met. Now as a forty year old instead of in my teens so much closer to when the book was first written, I see the technical mistakes as well as see that the scenes could have been better worked on. To heighten the drama there are red herrings and these probably need some more interaction, or build up so that the areas that are thick with science can be reduced.

We love these Fuzzies and though I know having read this many times that the Fuzzies have to be regarded as sentient, there should be more drama showing that it is not going to be a homerun. More doubt, less assurance. That would sharpen it.

Yet still a great way to spend a few hours with a book nearly fifty years old and a story though dated, still brings tears to my eyes and a giant smile at all the right times.

Lined up the links for the Reading List page.

Should finish the rollercoaster tycoon page today in the first form, since just have 8 scenario guides to post.

Have written half of todays scene for Chapter 7 of Space Mine, the shag scene.

Now a half hour later finished the shag scene and just have to add the names when I return home.

And now want to give a synopsis of Cautions’ Heir.

This was a regency that came to me just less than a year ago.

I wrote the entire first draft in under two months. Several thousand words a day.

The brother of a very wealthy man dies and he, denied wealth for so long, gambles it all away in an instant. He leaves a daughter and his estate and the daughter fall into the hands of the son of a man who also had lost a fortune but has spent the lifetime of this son rebuilding his wealth. Thus the son is frugal and now does what he can for the woman who is thrust upon him.

Cheryl is off to help at a tea so left to myself I am set to finish work on the RCT webpages I started yesterday.

I am going to read some of Patrick Rothfuss The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day One

And also work on the Graces of Brantley. So far today have written the prologue as the ladies of the writing group asked me to do and posted it for them to review. That was just over 1800 words. And have a few more paragraphs to finish chapter 2 were the heroine has met one of the influences in her life and we get a good deal of back story as she meets him.

Finished off chapter 2 with another 205 words. Done with writing for the day.
